The key idea of shape at Level 4 is that 3-dimensional objects can be shown by a variety of 2-dimensional representations.
At level 4 students are able to recognise and draw a variety of 2-dimensional representations of 3-dimensional objects. Types of two dimensional representations include the various views of an object (such as plan view, side view, front view), isometric drawings and nets. Making a two dimensional drawing of a three dimensional shape focuses attention on aspects such as the shape of the faces, where and how the faces join, and the relationship between faces, edges and corners.
This key idea develops from the key idea of shape at level 3 where students are able to identify and define shapes by their geometric properties.
This key idea is extended in the key idea of shape at level 5 by developing an understanding that some properties of shapes can be used to calculate other properties.
