3: Counting From One by Imaging - Addition and Subtraction

 

Tane has 5 biscuits. He gives 2 to his little brother. How many does he have left?

Student: One, two, three, he has three left.
Teacher: How did you work that out?
Student: I could see five, like five fingers then I took away two and counted that there were three left.

The Counting from One by Imaging stage is characterised by students counting all of the objects. Students at this stage are able to image visual patterns of the objects in their mind and count them.
