Solve multiplication problems using skip counting in twos, fives, and tens.
Number Framework Stage 4
Problem: In each packet there are 5 sweets. Jackie has 3 packets. How many sweets does she have?
Discuss why you write 5 + 5 + 5 on the board. Solve this on the fives abacus.
Examples. Word stories and recording for the number of sweets in 4 packets, 6 packets, 2 packets, 7 packets….
Shielding:
Norman has 3 packets and Lesley has 2 packets of sweets. How many sweets are there altogether?
Hide the fives abacus. Model 3 packets of 5 and ask the students what you are doing.
Write 15 on the board. Add 2 more packets on.
Record 15 + 10 on the board. Ask the students to imagine what you can see. Fold back if needed. Record the answer on the board.
Examples. Recording for 2 packets - 1 packet, 3 packets - 1 packet, 5 packets - 1 packet, 2 packets + 2 packets ,6 packets - 1 packet
Imaging Only: Examples. Without the fives abacus the students imagine and record:
3 packets - 2 packets, 5 packets - 4 packets, 9 packets - 8 packets, 9 packets + 1 packet….
