Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to help students learn groupings within 5. For example 1 and 4 make 5; 3 and 2 make 5.
Specific Learning Outcomes
Recall groupings within 5, for example 1 and 4 make 5; 3 and 2 make 5.
Required Resource Materials
2 pieces of card or paper
5 plastic cows or other farm animals
Activity
- Show the students the cows and the 2 pieces of paper (that represent paddocks). Explain to the students that the farmer has a group of cows and 2 paddocks to keep them in.
- Ask:
How many cows does the farmer have?
- Confirm by counting that there are 5 cows.
- Ask:
If the farmer has 2 cows in one paddock, how many cows will be in the other paddock?
- Place two cows in one paddock and three cows in the other paddock. Confirm by counting that there are 3 cows in the second paddock.
- Clearly state the number fact:
There are 2 cows in this paddock and 3 cows in this paddock, there are 5 cows altogether.
- Ask:
How else could the farmer arrange the cows between the two paddocks?
- Identify all of the possible arrangements (1 and 4; 0 and 5) and for each example clearly state the related number fact.
Extension
This activity can be repeated using ten cows to help learn groupings within 10.
